Sample preparation for ion microscopies in life sciences

Sample preparation is key in any analysis. For ion beam analyses, sample preparation must ensure minimal redistribution of elements and/ or molecules being investigated while preserving morphology of the sample. In addition, resolution with which we intend to probe the sample influences the sample preparation procedure(s). During the workshop we will discuss the requirements and the steps of the sample preparation, which will be followed by hands-on sample preparation (cryo-fixation, cryo-sectioning, freeze-drying, sample mounting and stereo microscopy) for element distribution analyses ((micro-)PIXE), density analyses (STIM), molecule distribution analyses (MeV-SIMS). Attendees will gain fundamental knowledge and in-person experience of a sample preparation of different biological samples.
